We interviewed Daniel Charlong, Program Manager here at SCC for a Q&A on cybersecurity. As a cybersecurity expert, Daniel has a profound understanding of how standards are evolving to keep up with technology and how they can improve security and privacy for people in a new virtual world.

Q.

How do you feel the pandemic has impacted the technology industry?

A.

The pandemic has revealed many strengths and weaknesses, which ultimately has been to the benefit of all consumers. For example, serious questions were raised about the security and privacy of various technologies used for video conferencing at the beginning of the pandemic. It was fascinating to observe how quickly security issues, such as breaches, shared passwords and hacks were addressed to restore the public faith in the integrity and security of the services offered. The pandemic has created a sense of urgency within the tech industry. A vulnerability seven months ago, coupled with an increase in the number of participants, exposes the growing threats.

Q.

In what direction do you see cybersecurity going?

A.

From a technical perspective, cybersecurity is forever evolving and innovating and will continue to do so long into the future. Standards and regulations need to evolve and innovate quickly to meet the growing demands of an increasingly global virtual environment. Enterprises need new and better cybersecurity and privacy standards to meet the growing demands of the digital world.

Q.

How does cybersecurity impact small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)?

A.

We live in a virtual world, and cybersecurity impacts everyone. Enterprises are responsible for safeguarding staff and customers’ personal and financial information, intellectual property, and trade secrets.  Cybersecurity solutions can protect data and information that is important to the enterprise’s operation and ensure that staff and customer privacy is protected. Cybersecurity solutions may also help enterprises understand various threats and vulnerabilities and provide sophisticated solutions to manage and control these risks.

Q.

How can SMEs enhance their cybersecurity posture?

A.

CyberSecure Canada is the country’s cybersecurity certification program designed by Innovation Science and Economic Development Canada for SMEs. A good starting point would be certification to CyberSecure Canada’s baseline controls to provide reasonable assurance that the enterprise is secure. The first step would be to visit the CyberSecure Canada website which has a lot of information about the program and the steps to certification.

Q.

How do you think technology will impact standards and assessments?

A.

Technology has already changed the way assessments are conducted which will continue to change and evolve. Until a few months ago, an assessor would spend days travelling to assessment locations. Today, assessors are conducting assessments using information technology for remote assessments.  Google Glass or Smart Glass and other smart devices are expanding the capabilities and tools that an assessor has at their disposal. Artificial intelligence is also an example of how technology can affect and improve the way we all live. Those same benefits are now being realized in the world of accreditation and certification.

Daniel Charlong is a Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Management Systems Assessor (CMSA), Certified Data Privacy Solutions Engineer (CDPSE), General Data Protection Regulation Practitioner (GDPR/P), and Certified Information Security Management Systems—Lead Auditor (ISMS LA).
